Roberta Roller Rabbit at Westside
Provisions District will launch their fall collection called Samarkand, inspired
by founder Roberta’s travels to Bangkok on August 1st. The inspiration comes from the
brand’s founder’s travels through the East.
“Wanderlust can be understood as a
desire to travel, but also, a nostalgia felt for places one has never
visited.
In 2001, on one of my first trips
to Bangkok, I struck up a friendship with three young Afghani brothers who ran a
gem store. When I mentioned that I was fascinated by vintage fabrics from the
SILK ROAD, the youngest brother, who was a passionate collector, started to show
and subsequently sell me Suzanis and Ikats gathered over the years across Kabul
and Peshawar.
In the Samarkand Collection, I was
inspired by the great cities on the SILK ROAD. Particularly, one of the oldest
of them all, Samarkand, renowned for its ancient dyeing arts. These are lands I
have never visited, but have always longed to experience.”
