How I'm Learning to Regulate My Nervous System and Reconnect With the Real World

I've noticed just how much noise fills my day. Notifications, emails, social media, news alerts, and endless scrolling are always competing for my attention. At some point, I realized that while I was constantly connected online, I had started to feel disconnected from myself.

As a content creator and social media professional, being online is part of my job. But I've realized that if I'm not intentional, my screen time can easily take over my day—and my peace of mind. Lately, I've been focusing on healthy ways to regulate my nervous system, reduce overwhelm, and reconnect with the world around me. The goal isn't to abandon technology altogether. It's about creating balance and making room for experiences that leave me feeling grounded, present, and energized.

What Does It Mean to Regulate Your Nervous System?
Your nervous system is constantly responding to what's happening around you. When we're overloaded with information, stress, and stimulation, our bodies can remain in a heightened state of alertness. This can show up as anxiety, irritability, brain fog, difficulty sleeping, or simply feeling exhausted. Learning to regulate your nervous system means finding practices that help your body return to a place of calm and safety.

1. Start Your Day Without Your Phone
One of the most impactful changes I've made is resisting the urge to immediately check my phone when I wake up. Instead, I spend the first 15 to 30 minutes stretching, praying, journaling, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of coffee. Starting my day with my own thoughts instead of everyone else's has made a noticeable difference in my mood and focus.

2. Take More Walks Outdoors
As an Atlanta native, I'm fortunate to have access to beautiful outdoor spaces. Whether it's a walk on the BeltLine, a visit to a local park, or simply strolling through my neighborhood, spending time outside helps me reset mentally and physically. Fresh air, sunshine, and movement are powerful tools for calming the nervous system.

3. Reconnect Through Face-to-Face Conversations
Technology allows us to stay connected, but nothing replaces real human interaction.
I've started prioritizing coffee dates, lunch meetups, and phone calls with friends over endless texting. Sharing laughter, stories, and meaningful conversations in person creates a level of connection that social media simply can't replicate.

4. Create Screen-Free Evenings
Not every evening has to involve scrolling through social media or binge-watching television. Some nights, I read a book, work on a Lego set, listen to vinyl records, or journal. These simple activities help signal to my brain that it's time to slow down and unwind.

5. Practice Deep Breathing
It sounds simple because it is. When I feel overwhelmed, I pause and focus on taking slow, intentional breaths. Deep breathing tells the nervous system that you're safe, helping reduce stress and anxiety in the moment. It's a small habit that can have a big impact.

6. Rediscover Hobbies That Bring You Joy
One of the best ways to spend less time online is to become fully engaged in something offline. For me, that's building Legos, exploring Atlanta, attending local events, and discovering new restaurants. Hobbies provide a healthy escape from the constant stream of information and help us reconnect with ourselves.

7. Be Present Where Your Feet Are
This has become my personal reminder. It's easy to be physically present while mentally somewhere else—checking notifications, responding to messages, or thinking about the next thing on our to-do list. When I'm with friends, at an event, or enjoying a quiet moment at home, I try to put my phone away and fully experience what's happening right in front of me.

Final Thoughts
The truth is, our phones and technology aren't going anywhere. They can be wonderful tools for connection, learning, and creativity. But they shouldn't come at the expense of our well-being.

This season, I'm challenging myself to spend less time consuming and more time living. More walks. More conversations. More laughter. More moments that don't need to be documented to be meaningful. Because sometimes the best way to reconnect with yourself is to disconnect from your screen. How are you creating more balance in your life? I'd love to hear what's helping you regulate your nervous system and reconnect with the world around you.
