#31DayReset Day 31: Create a Vision Board

This post is Day 31 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

Yes, it’s really the last day of the 31 Day Reset! Thank you for being a part of the community. Today, you have a great opportunity to build yourself a reminder of all your goals and dreams by creating a vision board. A vision board is a powerful visualization tool that you can create as inspiration for your journey toward your ideal life. Some people refer to it as a “dream board.” No matter what you call it, it’s basically a collage of pictures and quotes that serve to remind you of your passion and purpose way beyond this program. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be an artist to make one!

Today’s exercise will require you to assemble some art supplies. You’ll need:

  • a cork board, posterboard or small canvas
  • some magazines
  • markers or paint
  • some thumbtacks, pins, glue or tape

Step 1:

Cut out images from magazines (or draw your own) that represent your ideal life narrative, your personal mission statement or simply inspire you.

Step 2:

Paste or tack the images on your corkboard, posterboard or canvas.

Step 3:

Use your markers or paint to write your personal mantra or other favorite quotes onto your vision board.

Step 4:

If you like, frame your vision board and hang it on your wall. Make sure you display your vision board somewhere you’ll see it everyday and be inspired!

An alternative:

You can also create your vision board online with the O Dream Board program from Oprah.com. I haven’t used it yet myself, but it looks like a cool way to utilize technology to put together your vision board. Plus, it’s free!

I used the O Dream Board program to create my vision board it was cool and easy to use

#31DayReset Day 30: Write Your Own Eulogy

This post is Day 30 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

So imagine you die at age 77 (which is about the average age people live to these days). Think about how you want to be remembered. What mark do you want to make on the world before you die? What do you want to contribute or what do you want to be known for in your life?
Here’s an easy format to follow, adapted from the Art of Manliness (random, I know – but I loved their approach!):
  1. Your geographic history (keep this brief). Where did you live? Did you travel all over or did you retire in one place?
  2. College and career. Where you went to school, what you majored in, what jobs you had. Include any awards or honors you won or accomplishments you made.
  3. Family and relationships. Did you get married? Have kids? How many?
  4. Your hobbies and interests. What did you do for fun in your life?
  5. The qualities and characteristics that set you apart and made you memorable. What did people like or admire about you?
  6. What people will miss about you. What impact did you have on people? How did you help them?

#31DayReset Day 29: Start a Side Hustle

This post is Day 29 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

One of the biggest complaints that many people have is that they don’t make enough money to live their ideal life. Even if you have a good-paying job these days, it can still be tough to make ends meet or do stuff on your bucket list, especially if you have kids and/or student loans. So if you desire to earn more money in addition to the job you have now, today I encourage you to start a side hustle.

This assignment asks you to consider starting a side hustle to earn more money in addition to your 9 to 5. A side hustle is a job that you do on the side in addition to your full-time job. Whether you take on a second job, do hair in your basement, provide consulting services or bake cakes to sell at the farmer’s market on the weekend, a side hustle is when you provide products or services in order to make money on the side. Typically, you would take something you’re good at (or passionate about) and offer it to people who want it. That sweet spot of skill and demand is your side hustle, baby! Many people eventually start making enough money with their side hustle to make it their full-time gig.
A few synonyms for a side hustle:
  • Part-time job
  • Second job
  • Small business
  • Side business
  • Slash career
Examples of side hustles:
  • Consulting
  • Catering
  • Tutoring
  • Photography
  • Blogging
  • Public speaking
  • Babysitting
  • Avon/Mary Kay
  • Ebay seller
  • Crafting/jewelry
And the list goes on and on. What are some side hustle ideas you could try that align with your passion and personal mission statement?
As you work on this exercise, you may find it useful to read some of my recent posts on biz and entrepreneurship with a focus on starting a side hustle.

#31DayReset Day 28: Develop a Self-Care Plan

This post is Day 28 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

The Challenge may be winding down, but hopefully you have already begun to see the value in focusing on your own happiness and well-being. Part of that focus should also be a dedication to your own self-care. When was the last time you sat down and thought about your own physical and mental health? For most of us, the answer is probably “never.” That’s why today, you’re going to develop a self-care plan.

Get out your Reset notebook and start a page labeled ”My Self-Care Plan.” This plan will be your guide for the next week of getting back in tune with your inner and outer self. It should help you become more mindful about your thoughts, as well as what you put into your body. Your plan for the next week might include some or all of the following, depending on your goals for your own life:
  • Wake up earlier
  • Eat breakfast every day
  • Meditate for 20 minutes a day
  • Go for a daily morning walk
  • Drink 64 oz. of water a day
  • Exercise for 15- 30 minutes a day
  • Run 1-5 miles a day
  • Try yoga or get back into it
  • Keep a daily food journal
  • Go meatless for a week
  • Cut out soda and/or junk food for a week
  • Stop eating out for a week
  • Find a good therapist
  • Make an overdue doctor’s appointment

#31DayReset Day 27: Take Yourself Out on a Date

This post is Day 27 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

Yesterday, you listed 100 things that make you happy. Today, you’re going to look back at that list and put together a set of activities to do today, all by yourself. That’s right, you’re going to get some valuable “me time” and take yourself out on a date.

Make plans with yourself to do something that makes YOU happy, regardless of what other people might think. For instance, if you love art museums or foreign films or long walks in the park listening to the birds, go out there and have fun doing it! No more waiting for someone to join you or not going to the movies or to dinner by yourself. Life is not reserved for other people, it’s here for you to live. And when you take yourself out on a date, the possibilities are endless!

#31DayReset Day 26: List 100 Things That Make You Happy

This post is Day 26 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

Yesterday, you stopped complaining and started being more grateful for what happens in your life. Today, you’re going to extend that practice by reminding yourself of everything that makes you happy. Today, you will make a list of 100 things that make you happy. The idea is that by verbalizing them, you will consciously (or subconsciously!) seek them out more often.

What makes you happy? What kinds of things, people, activities, music, memories, places, foods, smells, make you feel alive? Sit down and come up with a list of 100 things. I know, it sounds like a lot, but once you get going, you realize that there are actually hundreds of things that make you happy! Nothing is too small or silly to put on this list. It’s YOUR list. Don’t think. Just write. Whatever first comes to mind will be real and true for you.

#31DayReset Day 25: Stop Complaining for 24 Hours

This post is Day 25 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

Most people do not realize that as they continue to find things to complain about, they disallow their own physical well-being. Many do not realize that before they were complaining about an aching body or a chronic disease, they were complaining about many other things first. It does not matter if the object of your complaint is about someone you are angry with, behavior in others that you believe is wrong, or something wrong with your own physical body. Complaining is complaining, and it disallows improvement.
- Abraham
Today’s exercise requires you to monitor your own complaints and replace them with something more productive: gratitude.

Step 1:

Take your Reset notebook around with you today and write down every instance where you complain about something. It could be as small as complaining about the weather or the way your partner leaves hair in the sink.
Example complaint: At 3:05 pm I tweeted about how much I hate the traffic in LA.

Step 2:

For each instance, write down a statement of gratitude to combat the complaint. Think about the “silver lining” in each of your complaints.
Example gratitude statement (to combat the complaint in Step1): I’m grateful that I have a reliable car that I can use to travel back and forth to work in.
Take Action and Reflect: When you’re done, please share your experience with us in the comments! Answer these three questions in your response:
  1. How many times did you complain?
  2. Was it difficult to go a whole day without complaining?
  3. What did you do or say instead?

#31DayReset Day 24: Make a New Friend

This post is Day 24 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

Yesterday, you joined a community to support your goals. Whatever community you chose to join – whether online or offline – it’s not going to do you any good if you don’t connect with the people in it! So today, you’re going to make a new friend. The idea is that through your new networks, you now have new opportunities for mutual support. The more like-minded people you align yourself with, the less lonely it will be on the road toward reaching your goals.

Think about the people you’ve encountered so far in your community of support. Who have been the folks that you’ve “clicked” with the most? Make a list of at least three people you’ve met recently that you have something in common with. Or maybe just those who have a similar outlook for their future and goals for life. These are your potential new friends!
Your next step can take the form of any of the following:
  • Invite them to meet up for coffee, lunch, drinks or dinner
  • Ask them to join you for an upcoming event of mutual interest – perhaps a seminar, conference, happy hour, concert, play, art gallery, or party
  • Call, Skype, email or text them to see how they’ve been doing since the last time you saw them
Remember, real friendships take time! You’re just taking the first step now to build a new relationship that will support and uplift you in your ongoing journey to live a successful life.

#31DayReset Day 23: Find a Community to Support Your Goals

This post is Day 23 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

As Motivated Sista points out, sometimes it can be difficult to share our goals and dreams with our friends and family, especially if they’re negative people. They may not mean to intentionally dash our hopes, but it can happen quite often. In those cases, it may be useful for you to turn to other communities of mutual support to help you along in your journey to reach certain milestones in your life. Today find a community to support your goals.

Today’s exercise requires you to explore different groups that you could join as part of your personal development journey. One thing you might do is to take a look at your Reset Project and think about what communities could support you in those specific goals.
Here are some examples of communities you might explore, depending on what area of your life you want to develop:
  • Professional Associations
  • Membership Organizations
  • Places of Worship
  • Meetup.com (type in a search topic related to your goal)
  • LinkedIn Groups (type in a search topic related to your goal)
  • Facebook Pages and Groups (type in a search topic related to your goal)

#31DayReset Day 21: Remove Negative People from Your Life

This post is Day 21 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

You may have heard this enlightening statement at some point in your life from Jim Rohn:
You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with
Do you agree? I do. The people you allow into your life can have a profound influence on your thoughts and actions. As a result, if you’re surrounded by negative people most of the time, your progress in life can be hindered.

In my own life, I made a personal commitment to myself this year to get rid of all the things that did not make me happy, which involved a massive Facebook unfriending and distancing myself from some toxic people in my life. And let me tell you…I never realized how toxic negative people can be until I changed my own worldview. Over the past few years, I’ve come to understand this fundamental principle from spiritual teacher Marianne Williamson:
Love in your mind produces love in your life. Fear in your mind produces fear in your life.
In other words, what goes in is what comes out. What that means for me is that I try to surround myself with loving people in order to produce more love in my mind, and therefore more love in my life. When I hang around people that constantly live their lives in fear, it literally drags me down into the dumps with them as well. Whether it’s negative food or negative energy or negative people, it ALL affects your body, your soul and your mind. Yesterday, you got rid of stuff you don’t need. Today, you’re going to remove negative people from your life.

Make a list of all the people in your life who bring you down. These are the people you know or hang out with who are major Debbie Downers, who complain all the time and have nothing but bad things to say about other people. They are the cynics and the snarks who have nothing better to do than talk about how much everything sucks – people, work, life in general. This list might include all the folks you ignore when they call, text or email you because, well, just the thought of interacting with them is depressing. Get my drift?
  • Friends
  • Family members
  • Current or ex-romantic partners
  • Co-workers or colleagues
  • Old high school or college buddies
  • Facebook friends
  • Twitter followers
Do what you have to do to remove these folks from your life (or at least limit your exposure to them), whether that means not sitting next to them at lunch in the company cafeteria, declining their invitations to hang out or unfriending them on social networks.

The Elephant in the Room: It is not lost on me that the negative person you need to purge from your life might be YOU. If you are your own personal Debbie Downer, here is a special modification for this exercise.
  • Take your notebook around with you today and make a list of all the instances where you express negativity or cynicism throughout the day – either with your thoughts, words or actions.
  • For each instance, explain why you said, thought or did what you did. Be honest. Were you jealous? Feeling depressed? Angry or annoyed?
  • For each instance, brainstorm what you could have said, thought or done instead. Could you have looked at the glass half-full? Saw the situation from the other person’s point of view? Showed compassion instead of cattiness?

#31DayReset Day 20: Get Rid of Stuff You Don’t Need

This post is Day 20 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

A lot of us have accumulated so much physical stuff over the years, that our closets might resemble something from the TV show, Hoarders. The pressure to consume and buy more and more stuff to fill our homes is all around us, which makes it tough to figure out what we really want and need in our lives. But what would your life be like with less stuff? Probably more meaningful and less cluttered. Today, you’re going to get rid of all the stuff you don’t need.

Go through your living space today and be ruthless in getting rid of ALL the stuff you don’t need. Every single bit of it. Go through closets, bedrooms, shelves, storage rooms, even your home office. For each item, ask yourself the following questions:
  • Do I really need this?
  • Do I even want it anymore?
If the answer is yes, keep it and love it. If the answer is no, kick it to the curb by throwing it away, giving it away or recycling it. If you have a roommate, live-in partner, spouse or kids, you can also ask them to do the same.
What are some of the kinds of things you might get rid of?
  • Clothes
  • Shoes
  • Papers and magazines
  • Knick-knacks
  • Broken appliances/electronics
  • Anything you haven’t used or worn in six months
  • Things you’ve never used or worn

#31DayReset Day 19: Revive Your Love Life

This post is Day 19 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

Today’s challenge has two options: one for those who already have a partner and one for those who are single and looking for a partner.

Option 1:

If you already have a partner or spouse, do something out of the ordinary. Do something you used to do when you first met or do something you’ve never done before. Do something romantic for no reason except that it’s Saturday. If you’re looking for ideas, I always find good ones on Lovingyou.com pertaining to love, romance, passion and sex. They also have a really fantastic list of date night ideas whether you want to stay in or go out. Clearly, there are a million ideas out there to bring more spice into your relationship. Try one!

Option 2:

If you want to find a romantic partner, you can approach someone you already like or find attractive and ask for their phone number or ask them out on a date. Or, instead of staying in the house watching TV, make plans to go out tonight to a popular spot for singles in your area – perhaps a lounge or nightclub. You might also get some ideas from this post: Five Often-Overlooked Places to Meet Single Men. Or, you can sign up for an online dating service. If you’ve never tried online dating before, I’ve written A Brief Guide to Getting Started with Online Dating. After experimenting quite a bit with different online dating sites over the past year, I have a few favorites that I outline in the post along with some valuable tips to maximize your online dating experience.

#31DayReset Day 17: Ditch TV for 24 Hours

This post is Day 17 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

What would you do with five extra hours in your day? Probably make more progress on your life goals, that’s for sure! Yet, this is the amount of time the average American spends watching TV.

Need another reason to step away from the boob tube? Well, black women are probably the ones who are most affected by the negative aspects of watching TV, because as an ethnic/gender group, we watch more TV than any other group in the United States. Yes, as in more TV than the average of 5 hours a day! Which may be explain why too many of us are overweight and unhappy when we should be healthy and fulfilled. Let’s stop letting TV (or mindlessly surfing the internet) take away the time we could be spending on more productive pursuits.

Today’s assignment requires you to eliminate a common time-waster so that you have more time to devote to the things that really matter to you. For the next 24 hours, I challenge you to ditch TV or non-work use of the internet. This exercise will help you further redesign your day for maximum productivity.

Here are just a few things you can do with the extra time:
  • Catch up on the assignments from the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge
  • Read a book
  • Listen to uplifting music
  • Call or visit with a friend
  • Make a home-cooked meal for you and/or your family
  • Exercise
  • Clean or declutter your living space
  • Work on your business
  • Get some sleep

#31DayReset Day 16: Redesign Your Day

This post is Day 16 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

Yesterday, you conducted an audit of your time. You were able to look at how you spend each hour of your day and see some patterns that could be modified or changed. Today, you’re going to experiment with the data you collected and redesign your day to make it more productive.

Today’s assignment is to outline a strategy to redesign your day to make more time for the things truly matter to you. You can present your redesign plan in a simple paragraph or a bullet point format. Your plan to redesign your day might include the following
  • Wake up earlier (or later)
  • Negotiate different working hours at your job
  • Eat a healthy breakfast in the morning
  • Schedule 30 minutes for exercise or just a walk around the neighborhood
  • Pack a lunch instead of spending time and money on eating out every day
  • Use your lunch break to take care of personal appointments, work on your business or blog, read a book or call to check on a loved one
  • Cut out activities that “kill time” i.e. mindlessly checking text messages, unproductive phone calls
  • Stop surfing the internet for long periods of time without a real purpose
  • Go to bed earlier (or later)
  • Schedule time for daily meditation or prayer
Since the majority of my day is at work I will--- > I will Use my lunch/ break to take care of personal appointments, work on my business and blog

#31DayReset Day 13: Craft Your Ideal Life Narrative

This post is Day 13 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

One of the most powerful ways to get clear about your goals and dreams is to visualize them. It can be incredibly motivating and inspiring to really be able to see your desired path in your mind’s eye, to go to sleep dreaming about it and wake up thinking about it. Over the past week, you’ve started to do a bit of visualizing on paper by creating a life map. Yesterday, you even went head to head with your resistance to dreaming big by writing a letter to your lizard brain. So today, there’s nothing holding you back from getting even more specific in your visual by imagining what your ideal life would really look like once you put it all together. Today, you are going to write your ideal life narrative.

I am living in Atlanta Ga. I have a comfortable and chic town home. I have close relationships with my  family. I have weekly brunches with my close friends. I spend the summer traveling and in the fall attending various fashion events. I also have my own  annual event where I show my appreciation for my supporters of my blog site.  I earn a comfortable income doing what I love - I have a handsome, loving partner who supports me in my goals and allows me to support him in his. I am healthy both physically and mentally. I exercise daily and have a good trainer who helps me grow and prosper. I invest in webinars, and read books to stay sharp in my craft.  Every morning I give thanks in prayer and listen to my inspirational podcasts throughout the day to keep myself motivated.  As a result, I spread as much love and positivity on the streets of my journey. Every year, I donate to the breast cancer foundation and volunteer my time with the youth.
