Sisters of Today and Tomorrow Celebrated Women's History Month, Honoring Xernona Clayton

Sisters of Today and Tomorrow (SOT) celebrated its 9th annual women’s history month program, “Celebrating Women of Color… The Image of Women in Television”, this past Saturday, March 2, 2013, with women and girls, through-out Metro Atlanta.

“Our goal is to educate and entertain you this afternoon,” statedKendall Chambers-McEachin, Corporate Legal Manager at Turner Broadcasting Entertainment Networks, who was the Mistress of Ceremony. The lively affair was hosted in the Atlanta City Hall Council Chambers, where the organization honored Civil Rights Activist Xernona Clayton, with the “Defining Your Moment Award”, as the first woman of color in the south to host her own television talk show, breaking the color barrier in television for the first black television anchor in Atlanta and many others.

Twanda Black of KISS 104.1FM highlighted women in television history Nichelle Nichols and Oprah Winfrey, along with SOT’s first member of Sisters of Today and Tomorrow, Idalis Melancon, who highlighted Dianahh Carroll. The contemporary gospel, soul singing group “God’s Gurls” performed two soul stirring songs, saluting Ms. Clayton. The panel discussion, “Maximizing Our Moment” with TV One’s R&B Diva’s Executive Producer / Cast member Nicci Gilbert and Executive Producer of Being Bobby Brown” and “The Houston’s On Our OwnWanda Shelley, was moderated by McEachin, where they discussed the highlights, pitfalls and images of today’s women in television.

SOT culminated its 9th annual women’s history month experience with Singer Nicci Gilbert leading God’s Gurls and the audience in an impromptu version of “I’m Every Woman”.

“This event became a full circle for me,” stated Carla Morrison, Founder/Executive Director of SOT. “Kenya James was our first person/girl to be a keynote speaker during our annual women’s history month program, she came back as an alumna of Howard University, now working in Washington, DC for a U.S. Senator, to present Ms. Xernona Clayton with her award; One of our early members, who is now a Freshmen at Spelman College and a few of the current SOT members were all in attendance, where they not only saw and heard living history at her best, but had a chance to meet Ms. Xernona Clayton. This event truly displayed who we are… Sisters of Today and Tomorrow,” said Morrison.

The program was sponsored by: City of Atlanta Mayor's Office of Constituent Services and FHLB Atlanta.
